Statement of Purpose

The Nantucket Historical Association recognizes the critical importance that philanthropic contributions have on the success of the organization. Therefore, the NHA has a responsibility to its constituency, to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and to the donors that support the organization to ensure that all gifts from private external sources are appropriate to the mission of the organization, that they are legal to the best of its knowledge, that the donor has a charitable intent, that the donor’s rights are protected, and that the gifts do not carry any restrictions or conditions that may compromise the organization at any time, now or in the future. Towards that end, the Nantucket Historical Association adopts this written policy that reflects the organization’s approach to cultivating, soliciting, accepting, and processing gifts.

The Nantucket Historical Association shall adhere to all Federal law, the Internal Revenue Service Code and all of its regulations, and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts statutes relating to charitable organizations and not-for-profit corporations.

In addition, the Nantucket Historical Association follows the codes of ethics approved by the National Society of Fund Raising Executives (NSFRE), the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE), and the National Planned Giving Council (NPGC), and it adheres to the Donor Bill of Rights.

All information concerning donors or prospective donors, including their names, addresses/telephone information, the names of their beneficiaries, the amounts of gifts, size of estate, etc. shall be kept strictly confidential by the NHA. Information will be released only with the written consent of the donor and the written approval by the executive director of the NHA or an appropriate representative.

This policy is adopted by authority of the NHA’s board of trustees, which shall have the power to amend it, and shall be responsible, through its designees, for its implementation. This policy shall become effective upon approval and will supersede any existing policy purporting to cover the subject matter of this policy.
