NHA Hires Summer Horticulture Intern

NANTUCKET MA: The Nantucket Historical Association (NHA) is pleased to announce that Rachel Stevens will be joining the Maintenance and Grounds Department in late May as horticulture intern.

Stevens is enrolled in the Master of Landscape Architecture program at the University of Virginia and has a strong interest in landscape history and preservation. “Rachel’s interests will fit in very well with the NHA’s ongoing garden restoration and interpretation efforts, especially at the Oldest House and Greater Light,” said Kathrina Pearl, NHA landscape and garden manager. “She will be involved with site-development projects and garden tours at those sites, as well as helping to maintain the garden spaces at all NHA properties.”

This full-time position will last ten to twelve weeks, and while employed with the NHA Stevens will perform basic garden-maintenance operations at NHA sites, help to develop new garden-based educational programs, and will conduct garden tours at the Oldest House kitchen garden, which will begin June 3 and be offered every Friday at 11 A.M. thorough September 6.

“Rachel is enthusiastic about this internship, which she sees as the perfect blend of design work, historical preservation, and basic gardening. She also looks forward to exploring the ways in which landscape architects can help to interpret historic landscapes for the public through design,” said Pearl.
