NHA's Food for Thought Series Features "Nantucket Mushrooms" with Todd Leftwich on April 7th in the Whaling Museum

NANTUCKET MA: The Nantucket Historical Association (NHA) will present “Nantucket Mushrooms” featuring Todd Leftwich, at the Food for Thought series, on Thursday, April 7, in the Whaling Museum, 13 Broad Street, at noon. Free admission; bring your lunch.

An island resident for the past twenty-five years, Leftwich has had an interest in fungi, particularly mushrooms, since childhood.  He leases land at Moor’s End Farm where he has a lab and farms mushrooms. His specialty is growing gourmet mushrooms that he sells at the Farmers Market, at Moor’s End, and to various island restaurants.

“There are numerous mushroom varieties on the island, and in addition to growing them, I collect from the wild ones that cannot be cultivated,” said Leftwich.  He will discuss the basic process of breeding fungi to grow mushrooms, and because the growing season is primarily during the summer, he will show images of the many different varieties available.

The Thursday, April 14, Food for Thought will feature Nicole DuPont, who will discuss “Shepherding on Nantucket.”

The Thursday talks are free to the public and are given by notable Nantucket residents, on a range of topics. The Food for Thought programs are supported by a grant from the M. S. Worthington Foundation.

Each talk begins at noon; bring your brown-bag lunch to the Whaling Museum.  For additional information about the 2011 Food for Thought series, please call 508-228-1894, ext. 0, or visit our calendar to view the schedule.
