Ways to Give
Make a Gift to the Annual Fund
The Annual Fund is the Nantucket Historical Association's yearly appeal to members and friends for contributions that help support the day-to-day operations of the association. The NHA is a membership-driven organization that receives no operating support from federal, state, or local government agencies. Because the Annual Fund is "unrestricted," we are able to use your gift where it is most needed. The Annual Fund helps us turn on the lights each day as well as develop exhibitions that blend historic artifacts with innovative technology to stimulate learning, and provide the interpretive staff who knowledgeably guide visitors through our Whaling Museum and other historic sites.
To contribute to the Annual Fund, please call the NHA's Director of Development, Cristin Merck at 508-228-1894, ext. 114; mail your donation to Annual Fund, Nantucket Historical Association, PO Box 1016, Nantucket, MA 02554; or email us.

Help Restore & Interpret Greater Light
— An Icon of the Nantucket Art Colony

Greater Light—the very name of this historic property elicits the spirit of the colony of artists that arose on Nantucket in the 1920s. Among them were Quaker sisters Gertrude and Hanna Monaghan who lovingly converted a barn at 8 Howard Street into an eclectic summer home and studio and later bequeathed it to the Nantucket Historical Association.
Thanks to the generosity of the individuals, foundations, and the Nantucket Community Preservation Committee, that contributed $1.2 million to the Phase I restoration, the NHA began work on the project in spring 2009 and concluded major restoration in late spring 2010. Restoration of the building and its charming garden will be completed by summer 2011.
The project architect was Chip Webster & Associates, and the general contractor was Twig Perkins Inc., with structural engineering by Structures North Inc. and excavation and stabilization by Toscana Corporation.
Throughout the summer of 2010, the NHA opened Greater Light to visitors as a “work in progress” to present the site’s wonderful potential to tell the story of Nantucket’s emergence as an art colony and resort in the twentieth-century.
When completed, Greater Light will become a place for the arts to flourish—a venue for lifelong learning and for small gatherings that extol the arts and culture, including exhibitions, poetry readings, plays, musical performances, and garden parties, much in the way the Monaghans engaged the community long ago.
While the Phase I restoration focused on major structural improvements throughout the building, Phase II will comprise the restoration and conservation of the interior, furnishings, and the development of interpretative and educational programs, cultural partnerships, tours, and exhibitions.
Gifts of all sizes are welcome and will help the NHA complete Phase II. For more information about Greater Light, to schedule a tour, or to make a contribution to the project, please contact Cristin Merck, Director of Development, Nantucket Historical Association, PO Box 1016, Nantucket, MA 02554; phone 508-228-1894, ext. 114; or email us.

Tribute
Gifts: Gifts
in Honor or in Memory of Someone Special
A Tribute or a Memorial Gift is a meaningful way to recognize friends and family, while supporting the NHA mission of collecting, preserving, and interpreting Nantucket's history. Tribute Gifts can celebrate special occasions such as weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, and graduations. Memorial Gifts are a fitting way to express your sympathy or remember a loved one.
For more information about tribute gifts, please call the NHA's Director of Development, Cristin Merck at 508-228-1894, ext. 114, or email us.
Build the NHA's Permanent Endowment Fund
To ensure its future, the Association must build its permanent endowment to provide additional investment income that will help offset ever-increasing operating costs. Your donations of cash or appreciated securities, as well as gifts of personal property, are most welcome. The NHA, with revenue from memberships, special events, and admissions, operates with a balanced budget every year.
You can build the NHA's permanent collections by donating your maritime artifacts, paintings, textiles, letters, diaries, logbooks, and books on Nantucket history during your lifetime or through your will. Donated artifacts and books will help islanders and visitors to expand their knowledge of Nantucket's cultural, social, political, religious, economic, and artistic development.

Join the NHA's Heritage Society
In 2001 the Board of Trustees enthusiastically voted to establish the Heritage Society to thank and honor all those who have invested in the Association's future during their lives by making a bequest. Enrollment is free and perpetual, and you may choose to remain anonymous. You receive the satisfaction of knowing that your interest in Nantucket's history will be preserved for future generations. For more information about planned giving and the Heritage Society, please contact the Development Department, by telephone at 508-228-1894, ext. 114, or by email, or by mail at Nantucket Historical Association, PO Box 1016, Nantucket, MA 02554.
