Varied accounts, 1728-1804. Jonathan Clark (1704-1795) was the keeper of most of the early accounts, which include whaling records of the Sloop Sherbourn, owned by Jonathan Clark, David Clark and Hezediah Cartwright. There is also mention of the Sloop Mary, the Sloop Success and the Sloop Dolphin. Other records relate to various business ventures including a sawmill, a farm and possibly a store. One page consists of a list of "Marks of Cretors" (Creatures), or livestock brands. Nineteenth century entries were apparently made by Jonathan's son Edmund Clark, who lived in Harlem (now China) Maine. Interspersed within the accounts (and entered later) are accounts of several dreams by Ephraim Clark (1751-1829), one dream is dated March 3, 1783, as well as religious reflections that appear to be in the same hand. Ephraim was the son of Jonathan Clark and the brother of Edmund Clark. He died in China [Maine].

Hadwen & Barney accounts, Alanson Swain scrapbook and diary.
--Accounts 1846 - 1849 of unidentified Nantucket tryworks. The keeper of the accounts was most likely Alanson Swain (see below), as the dates for the tryworks match dates Swain was in business; also Swain lived in Poughkeepsie (origin of the newsclippings and diary) during matching dates. --Middle part of account book is scrapbook of newspaper clippings from Nantucket and Poughkeepsie, NY, 1860s and 1870s. Articles by A. Swain, James Marshall, and Nathaniel Barney pasted on to pages. Most likely kept by Sarah Barney Swain. --Diary, January 1, 1869 - August 9, 1870, Poughkeepsie, N.Y. (located at back of volume). Keeper appears to have been Sarah Barney Swain (1829- 1905) who married Alanson Swain (1818-1877) in 1852. Diary contains frequent references to "A.S." Also mentioned: Edwin (Swain) (Alanson's brother), Maria Starbuck, Ellen Starbuck (Edwin's wife), A.S. Barney, Eunice (Swain) (Alanson's mother) and other relations. The family left Nantucket in the 1850s, moving to Yonkers and then Poughkeepsie. Sarah's father, Nathaniel Barney, died in Poughkeepsie in 1869. Baby (Clarkson) and Hadwen (son) are also mentioned. Diary begins with heading "Every day events during 1869" and is at times quite detailed. Activities of Alanson referenced (ploughing, building, slaughtering...), visits from family, social calls, drives and picnics, weather noted, and a mention of two trips to Vassar to hear a lecture and Commencement exercises (June 23).
Historical Note: Alanson Swain married Sarah Barney, daughter of Nathaniel Barney. In 1855 he and his brother-in-law, Joseph S. Barney, were admitted members of the firm of Hadwen & Barney (see obituary in EAS coll.). Record of sale of oil, and charges for production of oil listed.

AB 549
This long ledger book, covered in sheepskin, contains accounts kept by two different men, [Elisha Coffin] and Elisha Clark, and spans nearly 100 years, from 1743 to 1837. Elisha Coffin lived on Nantucket. Elisha Clark, born on the island, lived in Harlem, Maine. Elisha Coffin (or Elishai Coffin as indicated in Barney) is most likely the earlier keeper of the ledger. The seller of the volume attributed the early entries in the ledger to Coffin. The only proof that the volume was kept by Coffin is the existence of a loose receipt in the ledger signed Elisha Coffin (see page 73). Elisha Coffin (1726-1777--it is recorded in Starbuck that he died running to a fire) was a provisioner (most likely he owned a shop) and a blacksmith, and possibly a farmer. His accounts, which begin in 1743 (see page 17) and end in 1774, record various sales to Nantucketers. Items listed include foodstuffs such as corn, peas, sugar, rice, flaxseed, tobacco, coffee, rum, and rice. Leather, pipes, frying pans, thimbles, and shoes were also sold. Labor performed (his), such as carting, cutting wood, and working on the docks is also recorded in the ledger. In return for both his labor and goods, Coffin was paid in cash, with foodstuffs (such as codfish, a pig, a calf), and with labor (one day's work, weaving and spinning, even schooling--see page 24). The ledger provides an excellent example of the barter economy that existed on Nantucket prior to the Revolutionary war. Coffin was also a blacksmith. The ledger lists the items he manufactured and the prices (in pounds, shillings, and pence) at which they were sold. He made locks, chains, eel spears, hinges, tongs, repaired gunlocks, andirons, and pumpboxes. Unfortunately, there appears to be no suggestion that he made whaling irons, although he did record work performed on the sloops "Dolphin," "Cumberland," "Hepzabeth," "Enterprise," and "Phoenix,"several of which were whaling vessels. A particularly interesting entry pertains to an Indian who was the servant (or slave?) of Peleg Gardner (see page 9). The Indian listed received a cash payment which amounted to only a small percentage of what his master derived from the Indian's labor. (This entry is difficult to interpret: at first glance it appears that the Indian was exchanged for a tun of spermaceti oil.) Elisha Clark (or Elishai Clark, or Clarke) was the second keeper of the ledger. Elisha Clark (see Clark green file) was born in 1785 and died in China, Maine in 1865. He was the son of Edmund Clarke and Rachael Coffin. Members of the Clark family settled in Harlem (now China) Maine (see also AB 538). The town Harlem is mentioned several times. The ledger was kept from 1806 to 1834. Page three contains the words "Elisha Clarke's Book". Clark was a farmer and laborer and, it appears, an accountant. Not only do his entries detail accounts, but they describe his activities--plowing, planting, harvesting--and the weather. There are also several copies, or drafts, of letters, a list of vocabulary, and what appears to be a speech or rumination on the last page of the ledger (possibly copied from another source). Pressed flowers can be found on the first page. Of particular interest are the recordings of two indentures, or work arrangements. Page 6 records an indenture made in 1824 between Clark and Abram Mclaughlan in which it is agreed that Mclaughlan's son Thomas will live with Clark until the age of twenty-one. In return Thomas will receive a yoke of oxen, one colt, six sheep, and one suit of clothes suitable for business. On April 17, 1819 (page 20) Clark writes that on this day he agreed with William Allen to take his boy George and vittle and clothe him one year for his work. Also of interest is an entry from 1824 (page 129) in which Clark records "to one day seeing to the town affairs" and "to one half day writing notifications for town meeting" and "to one half day to J. Weeks to deliver a Warrant." On the same page he records, drawn against the town of Harlem, "to one day settling town accounts" (1821) and "to one day before the Committee on towns as Eveadance [sic] for the town." On the following page Harlem is also debited for "one half day for notifying a meeting." Clearly, Clark was more than a farmer, appearing to be involved in town affairs. How did two men come to write in one book? Elisha Coffin's daughter Rachel married Edmond Clark. According to Barney, Elisha Coffin and Elisha Clark (if the keeper of the ledger is the Clark mentioned in Barney) were first cousins once removed. Perhaps it was through this relationship that the book descended from Elisha Coffin to Edmond Clark.

AB 550
Ledger from the grocery store of William Holland, which was located at 39 Main Street (according to the 1914 Nantucket Directory), 1915. The book was found in the third floor attic of 35 Main Street. Accounts of many individuals are listed, which include foodstuffs and prices. The cover of the ledger is inscribed with the word "Cliff," so perhaps the accounts were for people living on the cliff (including Cliff Road).

AB 551
Ledger from the grocery store of William Holland, which was located at 39 Main Street (according to the 1914 Nantucket Directory). The book was found in the third floor attic of 35 Main Street. The book lists the accounts for Fernando G. Echeverria (who is listed in the 1909, 1919, and 1927 Nantucket directories as living at 9 Cliff Road). The cover of the book is inscribed with the name Echeverria. The book spans from December to June of 1919, when Mr. Echeverria settled his account.

AB 552
Ledger from the grocery store of William Holland, which was located at 39 Main Street (according to the 1914 Nantucket Directory). The book was found in the third floor attic of 35 Main Street. Accounts are listed for the Springfield House, Robert Mack, Congdon's Pharmacy, Levi Coffin, George Abbott, Athletic Club, Marcus Dunham, Nantucket Railroad, Dexter Nickerson, and others.

AB 553
Ledger, bound in vellum, kept by George Bunker (1671-1744) and Caleb Bunker (1699-1777). Ledger spans years 1701-1777. George Bunker kept the book from 1717 to 1741; Caleb Bunker kept the volume from 1765 to 1777. (George was the father of Caleb). Entries include accounts, judicial proceedings before George Bunker and Caleb Bunker as justices of the peace, and records of marriages performed by both Bunkers. Volume begins at both front and back, with respective page numbers. Pages 22-26, "front" of volume, appear to have been excised (or misnumbered). Items of interest: ms. copy of early document detailing purchase of Nantucket by Thomas Mayhew (and Thomas Macy) from James Forot (Forrest), agent to William Earl of Sterling (page 77d). Note concerning purchase of servant girl, Hannah (slave?). Hannah appears to be an Indian, last name Mamuck (surname derived from Wanackmamack). Perhaps this is a case of debt servitude. Document dates from 1741 (p. 88). Page 121 marks the beginning of convictions and marriage records entered by both George Bunker and Caleb Bunker. Cases pertain to theft of fish, bastardy, Indian debts (Ruth Chegen), abuse, appointments of hog reeves. Interesting case of one Indian bringing suit against another Indian--for violently taking away his hat and keeping it from him, 1718 (p. 38, back of book). Intentions of marriage, published by the town clerk, Frederick Folger, also included. Additional records of marriages and judicial cases recorded by George Bunker at "end" of book (book starts at both front and back). Indenture between A.B., an Indian, and C.D. of Nantucket. A.B. will fish for C.D. until debt is paid off. Document dated 1714. Writ directed to George Gardner, Justice of the Peace, to ensure the payment of 24 shillings to Caleb Bunker from Lamo Jonathan an Indian, n.d. (adhered to inside of "back" cover). The volume is accompanied by photocopies of pages from the "Register" (a New Hampshire publication) describing the ledger and giving the names of those persons married by Caleb Bunker and George Bunker. The volume was originally in the possession of the New Hampshire Historical Society.
