History
The Nantucket Atheneum was incorporated as a private
institution in 1834. The original building, which
had been a Universalist Church, was destroyed in
the Great Fire of 1846. The present building, designed
by Frederick Brown Coleman in the Greek revival
style of architecture, opened its doors in February
of 1847. In the nineteenth century it was one of
the island's cultural centers, hosting lectures
by Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, Horace
Greeley, Lucretia Mott, and Frederick Douglass.
In 1900, the Nantucket Atheneum became a free public
library. The present library continues as a cultural
center supporting lectures, research, and exhibitions.

Special
Collections
The Nantucket Atheneum contains a small collection
of miscellaneous documents, which include manuscript
and printed materials. These items span the eighteenth,
nineteenth, and twentieth centuries. Some of the
items are also found in the collections of the Nantucket
Historical Association. An
online inventory, hosted by the NHA, is available.
Of particular interest are a number of eighteenth-century
ships logs and a manuscript entitled "List
of deaths and where [whare?] buried, 1826-- ."
These documents are available to researchers on
microfilm.
Town
Histories
The library contains town histories of a number
of Massachusetts towns, as well as towns in other
New England states. These volumes are listed in
the same index that describes the published genealogies.
Vertical
Files of Individuals
This accumulation of newsclippings, compiled from
nineteenth- and twentieth-century Nantucket newspapers,
consists mostly of obituaries, but also includes
wedding and anniversary notices and brief biographies
of Nantucketers. These files can be viewed by request.
Vital
Records
In addition to the vital records for the town of
Nantucket, the Nantucket Atheneum contains the published
vital records (up to 1850) for many Massachusetts
towns. These volumes are too numerous to be listed
here, but an index in the library lists the towns
whose published vital records are in the library.
Typewritten lists of births (1892-1942) and deaths
(1892-1957) compiled, and extracted, from Town Reports
are also in the Atheneum. Both lists are incomplete.
