What do Maori wakas, Sailors Valentines, Whirligigs, china teacups, and Chinese fans have in common? They are all part of the Hands-on-History “Be a Collector” activities being offered daily in July and August in the Whaling Museum’s Discovery Room, 13 Broad Street, 1 – 4 P.M.

This educational crafts program is designed for children from 4 to 12 years old, and will explore the souvenirs of Nantucketers’ worldwide adventures.  Children must be accompanied by an adult companion throughout the program, and adults are encouraged to participate in the activities with the children.  “All activities are based on the many collections of the NHA,” said Chris Mason, NHA public programs coordinator. “Each day will feature a different theme-based activity, some of which will include making journals, whale stamps, china teacups, Chinese fans, Maori wakas, imitation scrimshaw, Sailors Valentines, and whirligigs.”

“This hands-on program is designed to introduce children at the elementary-school level to the fascinating world of Nantucket’s past by engaging the participants in projects and activities aimed at bringing the past alive,” said Mason. “These daily programs are free for NHA members or included with Museum admission. We hope to see you there.”
