Straight Wharf
Lawrence Miller Sr.
1940s to 1960s

This gas station was run by Lawrence Miller Sr., who owned all of Straight Wharf and offered to sell it to the town for one dollar, but was turned down. Gas was five gallons for a dollar, twenty cents for a quart of standard-quality oil, or thirty-five cents for “Wolfshead.” Others remember gas being as low as sixteen cents a gallon.

Charles Pearl says: “I remember that the usual amount of a fill-up was twenty-five cents. If you managed to get a dollar’s worth, you felt you were rich.”
