Nantucket Memorial
Airport
1946 to 1970s
Northeast Airlines began operations after World War II, ferrying passengers from Nantucket to Boston and New York, with connecting flights to Washington, DC, Maine, and other destinations. It was an integral part of the tourism industry in the summer. Its winter operation provided islanders with a connection to Boston and the Cape. Northeast Airlines initially flew a fleet of twelve DC-3s and later bought five Convair 240s, called Yellowbirds because they were painted bright yellow. Northeast expanded the terminal to include a coffee shop and gift shop.
