South Water Street
Andy and Edna Docca
1940s to 1970s

Andy and Edna Docca ran Andy’s Diner in the lean-to extension of the original Downyflake building. This cozy and popular eatery featured a counter, a handful of stools, and a few tables and served plain and quick “diner” fare. Andy cooked and Edna took the orders. They advertised “3 Meals a Day” and were open from 6:30 A.M. 6:30 P.M.

Andy’s Diner had a sign in the corner that read: “What the hell are you looking up here for?” Robert McGrath says: “The food was perfect. I ate there every morning in those days. They served good wholesome food, but no liquor. They had a milk bottle in the corner for the mother of the unknown soldier.”
