57 Main Street
J. B. Ashley
1910s to 1950s

J. B. Ashley operated this grocery store at the corner of Centre and Main Streets until after World War II, specializing in cutting meat to order (Friday night was the designated night), selling more meat than any other grocer in town. Ashley’s staff wore white butchers aprons and straw boaters. People recall that Ashley’s sold “just about everything—chickens, ducks, you name it, and they offered charge accounts.”
