The Moby Dick Inn and restaurant took over from the Old 'Sconset Inn on Ocean Avenue, converted into a popular eatery and lodging establishment by Frederick Howe in 1927. The restaurant was its biggest draw, a lounge and club below the bank occupying the former 'Sconset train station. Operated by Clem Reynolds, the Moby Dick had its heyday in the 1940s and '50s. A fire devastated the Moby Dick on Sunday August 5, 1956,
Reynolds decided to rebuild "from the ground up," and incorporated some of the building fabric of the defunct Beach House hotel to construct the Moby Dick cottages. It is now the Summer House Restaurant; the tiny Moby Dick cottages are privately owned.
