At one point last week Nantucket had the lowest absolute temperature in the continental United States. The red flags are getting tattered and frayed. They have flown for over two weeks straight and it will barely break thirty degrees today. Nobody has fished since mid-January. Some diehards might go out a few more times when the freeze-up is over, but the fact is there are not many scallops left. For most scallopers, psychologically, economically, and practically, the season is over.
