A third of all licenses went to women in 1986, and a number have owned and operated their own boats. This year sixteen women are on the water. Leslie Johnson (on left) fished for many years with Gibby Nickerson and remembers fondly his typically Nantucket-worldly comments. “We’d be heading out and it was looking a little rough, and he’d say: ‘Yep, there’s plenty of air out here - it’s fresh, and it’s free’.”
