Thomas Hiller and Elizabeth Smith, ca. 1794-6

Family register commissioned in celebration of the 1784 marriage of Thomas Hiller and Elizabeth Smith by Edward D. Burke. Several other extant register are signed by Burke, who may have been a schoolteacher or a professional genealogical artist. This is an example of the Nantucket style from the period 1790-1800, with identical five-petal pink rose blossoms (rosa rugosa), dark green serrated leaves, planted twin hearts, and a distinctive manner of placing birth inscriptions in an enlarged seed pod at the base of each flower.
