The Nantucket Historical Association is proud to announce the opening of a new exhibition Jag! Cape Verdean Heritage on Nantucket at the Nantucket Historical Association Research Library Whitney Gallery, 7 Fair Street on Saturday, October 5. Documenting the lives and history of Nantucket’s Cape Verdean community, the exhibition will feature historic and contemporary photographs and a small selection of objects and documents. The exhibition will be on display through February 28, 2003.
The Nantucket Historical Association is grateful to Theran Singleton, Carl Cruz, and Dr. Frances Karttunen for helping to organize this exhibition. In addition, the NHA thanks the many individuals and families who donated photographs and objects that made this collection possible. The exhibit was organized by chief curator Niles Parker, curator of library and archives Georgen Gilliam Charnes, curatorial assistant Ben Simons and was designed with the assistance of Claire O’Keeffe. An opening reception is planned for Saturday, October 5 from 10 A.M.–1 P.M. and will feature jag, a traditional American-Cape Verdean food. Related programming throughout the fall will include a storytelling event featuring renowned Cape Verdean performer Len Cabral, on Saturday, November 2. In addition, Frances Karttunen will give a lecture on Cape Verdean heritage on Friday, November 1, and a Cape Verdean holiday program have been planned. Photographs and documents relating to Nantucket’s Cape Verdean community have been scanned into the NHA's digital photo database and can be viewed at the Research Library.
