Elizabeth
"Liz" Wade Winship (b. 1951) and Deborah "Debbie"
Pixley Fraker (b. 1954)
Debbie Fraker and Liz Winship worked summers on Nantucket during their
college years. They first met in the spring of 1978 and developed a
close friendship, which grew with a love for family and friends and
continues to this day, their daughters now married with children of
their own. Debbie has been manager of The Lion's Paw for twenty-six
years. Liz worked for Nantucket Looms and bought the business in 1993
from the owners - Andy Oates and William Euler. The two women have been
leaders in Nantucket's business community, continuing the honored tradition
of woman-run commerce on island that has its roots in Petticoat Row.
Liz has been on the board of directors of the Nantucket Atheneum and
Small Friends and currently serves on the Building and Grounds Committee
of the Nantucket Cottage Hospital. Debbie and Liz were supportive in
the formation of both Children's House and Small Friends, and continue
to be actively involved.
The embroidered
narrative shows Debbie's house on Prospect Street, "Windy Hill,"
near the Old Mill. The two friends appear on the hill behind the house
surrounded by their dogs - with Liz in crutches and Debbie's laundry
on the line (she never uses a dryer).
