Nantucket Historival Association 1800 HouseScrimshaw, drawing on and incising ivory, is considered by some to be the only art form originating in America. Also, whalemen on Portuguese, British, and Australian vessels produced scrimshawed artifacts. Check this. It was practiced by sailors working on whaling ships from Nantucket and other New England ports.

Using a two-inch ivory disk, Lee Papale, a local artisan and frequent instructor at the NHA 1800 House, will guide students in the art of scrimshaw.

Designs, appropriate for the disk, are provided, as well as tools and ink to complete the project. Students will have a perfect item to add to their holiday treasures.
