“1800 House Sampler,” with Edith Bouriez
Tuesdays, July 7, 14, 21, & 28: 9 A.M.–Noon
Member $225; Nonmember $275
In the year 1800, young girls between the ages of nine and eighteen stitched their own samplers as part of their Quaker School curriculum. Six of those samplers, dated 1800 are preserved in the Nantucket Historical Association archives. The “1800 House Sampler” is a contemporary version of these samplers. The historic samplers were worked on very fine linen with a count of about forty threads to the inch and stitched with silk thread. This contemporary version is much more stitcher-friendly, worked on a fabric with eighteen threads to the inch with seventeen colors of DMC cotton floss. Cross stitch is the primary stitch, but other embroidery stitches, such as Queen (Rococo), Cretan, Satin, Stem, and Tent are used. The charm of the original samplers has been retained in their delightful naïveté with dogs and sheep smaller than flowers and birds larger than trees. Many of the motifs are exact replicas of the originals.
Names, initials, or lettering can personalize each student’s sampler. A hoop is provided with all materials and instructions to complete the sampler. Students should bring embroidery scissors and a notebook.
All materials provided. Maximum class size: 10
