NANTUCKET, MA: The Nantucket Historical Association (NHA) will be hosting a one-day NHA Explorations trip to Sandwich on Tuesday, June 7, 2011. This excursion will depart from Hyannis via a chartered bus at 9 A.M. Nina and Bob Hellman will be our hosts.
Incorporated in 1637, Sandwich is the oldest town on Cape Cod. Originally settled by the English, Sandwich became an agricultural community; the principal export was timber, much of which was shipped back to England.
The day will begin with a tour of the Cape Cod Canal Visitor Center, followed by a visit to the Sandwich Glass Museum, where guests will learn why a large part of Sandwich history is involved with American glass production and how the Boston & Sandwich Glass Company led the world in the manufacture of glass during the early nineteenth century. A glass-blowing demonstration will show how the molten glass—drawn from the furnace—is blown and pressed into exquisite shapes. A private buffet luncheon will follow at the historic Dan’l Webster Inn, recipient of the Distinguished Restaurants of North America award. It is known for its contemporary American cuisine and innovative chef’s specials that incorporate some of Cape Cod’s bounty from the sea.
After this relaxing repast, participants may go on a self-guided tour of Heritage Museums & Gardens, which showcases American Art and history on a campus that includes four buildings (Antique Automobile Museum, American History Museum, Art Museum, and Old East Windmill); and a hundred acres of spectacular tress and shrubs, flowers, and sweeping lawns. A true highlight will be the profusion of Dexter rhododendrons that should be in bloom.
The bus will return to Hyannis in plenty of time to catch the evening boat, fast ferry, or plane. Participants are responsible for their own transportation to and from Hyannis.
Space is limited, so the NHA is offering an early-bird discount special: Reserve by May 13; $85 for NHA members, $100 for nonmembers. After May 13, the cost will be $100 for NHA members, $125 for nonmembers. Price is based on a minimum of twenty participants.
